Google Search Console: How to Read Reports and Fix Issues
October 5, 2026Service Area Pages: How to Rank Across Johannesburg Suburbs
Service area pages are location pages that show a business serves a specific suburb or city, with unique, useful content for each. For Johannesburg, build pages for areas like Sandton, Randburg, or Rosebank only where you really serve customers, and add local proof instead of copied text.
Most Johannesburg businesses have one "Areas we serve" paragraph on the contact page and wonder why they only show up in one suburb. A person in Fourways searching for "electrician Fourways" wants to know you work in Fourways. Google wants the same proof. This guide covers how to build those pages properly, which suburbs deserve one, and how to avoid the mistakes that get pages ignored.
If you want the wider picture first, our SEO services page explains how local pages fit alongside technical and content work.
What are service area pages
A service area page is a page on your website built for one place you serve. It targets a search like "plumber in Randburg" or "accountant Sandton" and gives a visitor the details that matter for that area.
A good service area page has the same parts every time:
- A heading that names the service and the suburb
- A short intro on who you help in that area
- The services you offer there
- Local proof, such as a completed job, a client quote or a photo
- Local details, such as travel times and nearby areas
- Questions people in that suburb actually ask
- A phone number, a form and a clear next step
- LocalBusiness schema with the area marked up
The template stays the same. The content inside it must change from page to page.
Do they help rankings?
Yes, when each page matches real demand and says something specific. A page about Sandton can rank for Sandton searches in a way your homepage cannot. Google has no reason to show a general page for a very local query when a closer, more useful page exists.
There is a limit. Service area pages help your normal organic results. They have less influence on the map pack, which depends heavily on how close you are to the searcher and on your Business Profile. You need both working together.
Service area vs location page
A location page is for a place customers visit: a shop, an office, a branch. It carries an address, opening hours, parking details and a map pin.
A service area page is for a place you travel to. A plumber, a cleaning company or a garden service has no premises in Midrand, but still works there every week. The page proves you serve the area without pretending to have an office in it.
Never present a service area page as a branch you do not have.
Business Profile service areas
Your Google Business Profile lets you list the areas you serve. That helps Google understand your reach, but it does not replace pages on your own site. The profile is one signal and your website is another, and they should agree. We cover the profile side in How to Rank Your Google Business Profile Higher, and the review side in How to Get More Google Reviews. This post covers only the pages on your own site.
Which suburbs deserve a page
Build a page only where you can answer yes to most of these:
- You have done work there in the last year
- You get enquiries from that area
- You can reach customers there in a sensible time
- People search for your service with that suburb name
Your own data answers most of this. Check which areas your enquiries come from, and use Google Search Console to see which suburb searches already show your site. If a suburb gets impressions but no page exists for it, that is your first candidate.
There is no magic number. Start with three to five suburbs where you have real history, then add more as you gather proof.
Sandton, Randburg, Rosebank, Midrand and Fourways as examples
Each of these suburbs has a different customer, so each page should read differently. These are examples of the angle you could take. Replace them with your own jobs.
- Sandton: Mostly business customers around the Sandton CBD and Sandton City. Talk about office parks, tight deadlines and building access.
- Randburg: Mix of homes and small businesses around Randburg CBD, Ferndale and Blairgowrie. This is close to our own base, so local knowledge comes easily.
- Rosebank: Creative agencies, retail and professionals near Rosebank Mall and the Gautrain station. Talk about parking and quick turnaround.
- Midrand: Business parks, logistics and growing residential estates. Mention travel along the N1 and the Waterfall area if you work there.
- Fourways: Large residential estates and offices around Fourways Mall. Mention estate access rules if you handle them.
If you work in property, the same logic applies to agent websites. See our post on web design for real estate agents in Johannesburg for how suburb pages fit an agent's site.
How to write and structure each page
Aim for a page that a real person in that suburb would find useful. Length follows from that. Most good service area pages land between 500 and 900 words, but a short, specific page beats a long, padded one.
A clean page layout also helps conversions. Our guide on landing page design that converts covers the layout side, and our web design team can build the template so every suburb page loads fast and works on a phone.
Unique local proof
This is the part that separates a real page from a copy. Add things only you can add:
- A completed job in that suburb, with a short description and photos
- A client quote that names the area
- The specific problem you solved there
- A before and after, where it makes sense
Even one real project per page changes how the page reads.
Local details
Add facts that show you know the area:
- Nearby suburbs you also cover
- Typical travel or response time
- Landmarks, malls or business parks customers will recognise
- Local conditions that affect your work, such as older homes in one suburb and newer estates in another
Keep your business name, address and phone number consistent everywhere they appear. Small differences confuse both customers and search engines.
LocalBusiness schema with areaServed
Schema is code that tells search engines what the page is about. Use LocalBusiness schema and list the area you serve with areaServed. Be honest about what it does. It helps search engines read the page correctly, but it does not rank you on its own.

Mistakes to avoid
Doorway pages
A doorway page exists only to catch a search and send people to the same place. If a page has no purpose beyond ranking for a suburb name, Google treats it as a doorway page, and it is against Google's spam policies. Google's 2026 updates have also leaned further toward original, helpful content and away from thin pages made in bulk. We break that down in Google Algorithm Updates 2026.
A quick test: if you remove the suburb name and the page still fits any other suburb, it is not ready.
Copy-paste text
Swapping "Sandton" for "Rosebank" in the same paragraph is the most common mistake. Near-identical pages compete with each other, and Google often shows only one of them. Write each page from the job history and local details of that suburb.
Do not stop at pages either. Link your suburb pages from one main "areas we serve" page, and link back to your core service page. For how this fits technical and content work, see our guide to SEO for Johannesburg businesses.
Get a Local Page Plan for Your Johannesburg Business
Service area pages only work when each one is built on real work, real proof and real demand. Getting that right across suburbs like Sandton, Randburg, Rosebank, Midrand and Fourways takes some planning, and it is easy to waste time on pages that never rank. In a consultation, we look at where your enquiries actually come from, check which suburb searches already bring people to your site, and decide which areas deserve a page first. You leave with a clear plan: the suburbs to start with, what to put on each page, and how to keep every page useful and different from the next. Book a consultation and we will help you turn the areas you already serve into pages that bring in more local enquiries.
